about

Twenty years ago, Brian Krumm was in an odd place. His longtime band The Suede Chain was dissolving. But during years of touring with that band, Krumm had assembled a journal full of song lyrics and ideas for new tunes. Cut to the oft-visited bar Blind Pig Co. in Champaign, where Krumm found himself discussing making new music with drummer Mike Rader (Honcho Overload). The discussion led to songwriting sessions and then to a band with guitarist Roderick van Huis (Steakdaddy Six) on board and Suede Chain bassist Brian Hunt, with a long line of other mighty contributors along the way.

Krumm got to work compiling demos on quarter-inch reel-to-reel in his basement and soon had a demo tape to pass around. The tape landed in the hands of Geoff Merritt at Mud Records, who offered to release a record. Adam Schmitt, who had worked with Krumm and The Suede Chain, signed up as producer and the rest is history.

Released in December 1997, The First Spilled Drink of the Evening featured two other Suede Chain alum, Jake Brookman and Mary Weingartner, who added atmospheric, dramatic string parts.

The record won praise from critics soon after its release, including a write-up by Rolling Stone's David Fricke, who said, “The Great Crusades look at life through a shot-glass lens, mixing anger, muscle and minor-key remorse like a roughneck Tindersticks with the bonus of a singer (Krumm) who’s got the tubercular pipes of Tom Waits and Axl Rose’s love child.”

In 1998, Krumm relocated to Chicago and reformed the band with Hunt, drummer Christian Moder and guitarist Brian Leach. The album was re-released in Europe by Trocadero Records and the first of many tours overseas followed. Now, twenty years later, the album stands up—sonically, spiritually and topically, with all the emotion that was originally poured into the songs and recordings still at a fever pitch.
